Young Person’s Community Covenant

I am a young person living in the Egrets’ Cove who wishes to be an active participant in the activities of the community and to live with the adult members in ways that express the purpose and goals of the community.

PURPOSE:

To discover and experiment with different ways of living that use less of the stuff of the earth so that every living thing has what it needs to thrive and so that the earth’s resources can sustain all of us for generations to come.  We want to show others that we can have a good life without using up more than our share of everything.

BELIEFS:

  1. Humans are no more important than any other living things, but we do have a special responsibility to use our gifts and knowledge to care for the earth.
  2. Each one of us at Egrets’ Cove has valuable stories and experience that make us care about these things.
  3. Every living thing is valuable.
  4. Cooperation is a good way to live and work together.  We want to care about the other people who live here and to take responsibility for our own actions.
  5. People will disagree, but we can work it out in ways that give us new ideas that we may not have come up with on our own.
  6. Practicing consensus helps us to discover wise ways to live together.
  7. It’s not easy to help create good and fair ways to live together within earth’s ecology.  W e have to work on it day by day.

AGREEMENTS:

I will try to:

  1. Share my ideas and concerns with others in the community.  I can choose to attend meetings and participate in the conversation, especially if members are talking about something that affects me.
  2. Cooperate in the care of the land and everything we hold in common.
  3. Treat all life with respect and be friends with the others who live here.
  4. Do my share of the work of the community according to agreements that I make with my parents or other community members.
  5. Notice and think about how my actions affect the earth.
  6. Solve problems cooperatively.
  7. Share new ideas that I have and be willing to try new things that may be good for life on earth.
  8. Pay attention to what is going on around me and notice how things change.
